No surprises here: With all gambling activity pretty well concentrated in West Virginia's five casino resorts, these locations – the Mountaineer, the Hollywood in Charles Town, the Mardi Gras, the Greenbrier and Wheeling Island – are where poker players flock to from outside and within the state. Particularly high-stakes games and tournaments are the forte of the Big Easy Poker Room at the Mardi Gras, plus the wagering in the Greenbrier can get pretty breathtaking.

West Virginia poker tournaments offer a wide range of buy-ins for daily, weekly and monthly events; though players should note that essentially no tournaments are ever held at the Greenbrier or Wheeling Island. The Big Easy Poker Room at Mardi Gras offers single-day events of up to $1,000 buy-in monthly for high rollers.

But, hey, it's not all for high-rollers at the Big Easy: Cash games of $1/$2 and $2/$5 no limit Texas hold ‘em, $1/$2 and $2/$5 pot limit Omaha high, $5/$10 no-limit Omaha high, $2/$4 limit hold ‘em and $1/$5 stud games running regularly. In addition, one to two no limit hold ‘em events are played daily with buy-ins ranging from $40 to $435.

The Wheeling Island poker room is the smallest in WV, with just nine tames and only cash games on offer. You'll find $1/$2 and $2/$5 no limit Texas hold ‘em and $1/$2 pot limit Omaha high games.

In terms of top poker players from West Virginia, the official cash game winnings leader is Jason Koon at over $31 million accrued as of January 2020. Also of note is the no. 2 overall on the aforementioned table is Lee Childs, who finished seventh in the 2007 World Series Of Poker.

Mardi Gras Casino Poker Tournaments

Learning how to play poker at Mardi Gras Casino & Resort is more than an enjoyable experience…it's an adventure. Whether you are new to the game or have been playing for years, our style of poker will have you coming back time and again.

Texas Hold 'em

Have fun learning to play one of the classic poker games — Texas Hold 'em. The more you play, the more you'll understand the nature and beat of the game. The object of the game is to create the best 5-card poker hand, using any combination of seven cards. Before any cards are dealt, the player sitting next to the dealer button places a small 'blind' bet, whereas the person sitting directly to the left of that person places a large blind bet.

Here are a few simple rules to follow when playing Texas Hold 'em:

  • Every player receives seven cards: two down and five community cards
  • The dealer deals two face down cards to each person, starting with the small blind bet player
  • Betting begins, starting first with the small blind bet player
  • The 3rd, 4th and 5th cards are dealt face up, which is called the flop, followed by a betting round
  • The 6th card is turned face up (the turn) followed by betting
  • The 7th card is revealed, which is referred to as the river
  • Final bets are placed
7-Card Stud

7-Card Stud is another not to be missed game in The Big Easy Poker Room. The object of 7-Card Stud is to create the best hand of five cards. Grab a drink and a side of nachos and learn how to play this poker game that includes a big showdown at the end:

Mardi Gras Casino Poker Tournament Schedule

  • All players ante $1
  • Each player receives seven cards — four face up, three face down
  • The first two cards are dealt face down with the 3rd card being dealt face up
  • The player with the lowest card starts the betting, with bets ranging from $1 to $5
  • The 4th card is dealt face up, followed by another round of betting
  • The 5th card is dealt face up, followed by more betting occurs
  • The 6th and 7th cards are dealt face up, with betting occurring after each dealt card
  • Showdown! Each player will turn their remaining face down cards over and the dealer will announce 'all hands show,' and declare a winner
